Rob Van Gorp’s Personal Identity Theft Story
The thing about identity theft is that it can catch you at any moment. This is a phrase that Rob Van Gorp did not truly understand until a few weeks ago. Rob never really had anything wrong, and he thought he always kept his information safe. Well, to his surprise, Rob was not as protected as he had originally thought.
His Story
Rob was sitting in the parking lot about to go to work out at the gym when he received a call from his dad. Apparently his father got a phone message from the bank saying that they detected some sort of fraud on Rob’s credit card and they wanted to make sure that it was safe. Rob had to call the company and see what was going on.
The first thing the company asked was if his credit card was stolen. It was not. Rob had just used it about 15 minutes earlier, and it was still in his pocket. He got it out of the wallet just to make sure, but everything was there. That was really weird, because he was confused on how people could have gotten his information. The company worked with Rob really nicely and made sure his card was canceled.
What Rob figured was that his credit card info was stolen either online, when he was making a purchase, or maybe someone got a hold of the information when he was at a restaurant. It just goes to show you that you can never be too careful and that anytime you are out you need to make sure that you are really paying attention. You might never think that it can happen to you, but it can.
In Rob’s case he probably made out pretty lucky. There was no purchase over $10 made on his card, and in total only three purchases went through. It just goes to show you how you need to jump all over the thieves before they jump all over you. The longer you wait the more damage can be done to your card.
Always Be Aware
Rob also made sure that he kept in contact with the bank. If he saw anything that he did not recognize then he made sure he let them know. Like we said before, Rob got out of this whole mess pretty lucky. It could have been a lot worse for him. If you value your finances then you will want to make sure you are on top of it.
